Singing transmission

MessageAuthor

I have singing (whistling) sounds when driving low speeds in several gears. The garage sais that singing transmissions do not have to be a problem. I think this indicates wear or free play. The car drives ok and gears ok, so there is no problem besides the sound. What should I think of this singing?

I would interested in hearing on this too - my 2000 V40 1.9 D has also started manifesting similar behaviour, which has become progressively worse. At certain frequencies/vibrations, the gear box seems to emit a whining/ringing sound. At first it only happened in 1st and 2nd gear, usually when taking the foot off the accelerator somewhat, but now also in 3rd and 4th. Funny thing is, it only starts doing it after driving for 15 minutes or more. If I do a quick run to the shops, there are no such sounds....

Does the sound disappear when you operate the clutch? At what speeds do You hear the sound? My situation: second gear 30-40 km/u third gear: 30-50 km/u fourth gear: 40-60 km/u

RE: Singing transmission

I took a note of when I get the 'singing' in my gearbox (reardless of clutch operation) and it appears to be similar to DutchV40: 2nd gear - around 20 miles per hour 3rd gear - around 30 miles per hour and 4th gear - around 40 miles per hour. The singing is more noticeable when taking my foot off the accelerator around these speeds, but can also still be heard with my foot on the gas around these marks. I still also notice that the singing doesn't start immediately after I start driving the car - the first couple of minutes it drives without the singing, but somehow it seems to have warmed up after a couple of minutes/miles and the singing starts... Am just wondering if this is the same for you guys Kilou/DutchV40?

The singing starts directly (also when cold). Did you already check or renew your gearbox oil? How many km's did your car already drive?

Well, the only new info I have on this is that I did have the gear box oil drained and refilled, but that this hasn't made a difference for me in terms of eliminating the singing in the gear box at certain revs/speeds :-(
