Newbie-after a bit of guidance

Only 18 so i know it's a bit early to get a volvo :P but i was looking to get rid of my heap of a first car (a 1 litre corsa yes- given to me so i couldn't grumble you see) and buy something comfier more reliable and with a stronger engine- maybe with a bit of poke. so insurance is a pain but: Was originally looking at 1.6 escorts as my top option. But noticed volvo 440's are dirt cheap and a lot seem looked after. Would be looking at a 1.8 manual or maybe a 1.9 td manual. Any pointers on these what to look out for and what specs are what would be a help thanks
