Protracted Starting

MessageAuthor

Our S40SE 1.8 takes a lot of churning before it fires up - applies hot or cold. We've recently found that rather than starting it in one turn of the key as normal, if you turn it to position 2, then pause, and then complete the start it fires immediately ie as you would expect of a fully serviced 38000mile vehicle. The ignition system, battery etc, fault codes have been checked out by our local dealership and don't show anthing.... Any ideas?

is this fault intermitent, or there all the time? i would suspect the ignition barrel is worn,as was my friends v70, a new barrel cured the problem. paul

Thanks Its there 90% of time. The dealer is requesting help from Volvo to find a cure - I will mention your idea. Cheers, Martin.

Possibly fuel pump sender unit problem: non-return valve faulty or pump slow to run. Car takes longer to start especially if left some time or parked uphill (i.e the front of the car is at a higher height than rear). Try parking the car downhill, if fault then does not happen then this is even more likely to be your problem. Pete
