Hi, this is only a suggestion & if you've tried already, then sorry! Have you tried simply changing the ATF? My bro' had a Mazda 3 series a few years ago with these exact symptoms. He changed the ATF & that sorted it.
The best additive is Lubegard, it's even recommended by Volvo itself. Works great and extends the autobox life. Other additives I wouldn't recommend. Those ZF autoboxes aren't that robust, most start acting up above 120kmls. I only have a (pdf) German manual, here it is. Don't know if it's any use to you?

Towing is only allowed for short distances, no more then aprox. 10mls, and with a max speed of 30mls if I remember correctly. N is not a freewheel configuration like in a manual box. So or remove the driveshafts or use a trailer for longer distances. Towing a 480 without the engine running makes it steer REALLY heavy, I wouldn't recommend it not even for a short trip.
I know what you mean about the 480 my turbo got towed home on more than one occasion! Trying to get hold of a trailer at the moment so fingers crossed.
